by Q: Ball rest on cart path, where is the drop.
Q: A ball comes to rest on a cartpath. How do you determine where to drop? Moreover, do you have a choice on which side of the path or is there a set standard?

A: Dear John, The answer to your question on
dropping form a cart path can be found in rule 24-2 Immovable Obstruction.
In the definitions in the front of the rule book we see that an obstruction
is "anything artificial, including the artificial surfaces and sides of roads
and paths.....". As for your relief from the cart path, 24-2b will basically
tell you to find the nearest point that is not nearer the hole, affords complete
relief from the path(Lie of the ball, stance and area of intended swing)and
is not in a hazard or on a putting green. There will be only one nearest point
of relief that meets the requirements and you will drop within one club length
of that point not nearer the hole and not on the cart path. In taking relief
you may not consider which side of the path affords the best line of play,
the best stance or any other personal preferences. Also remember that you
may play the ball as it lies off the cart path, sometimes this is better than
dropping in some deep rough or in a bush or behind a tree or some other undesirable
place. John, thanks for the question and good golfing luck in 99.
